Hemkund Sahib
Hemkund Sahib is one of the holiest Sikh pilgrimage sites in the world — a Gurudwara set on the banks of the glacial Hemkund Lake at 4,329 metres in Chamoli district, surrounded by seven snow-capped peaks. The star-shaped Gurudwara built in white marble is extraordinary in its high alpine setting. The site's significance stems from Guru Gobind Singh's autobiography, where he wrote of meditating in a previous life at a seven-peaked lake identified as Hemkund. Despite the formidable altitude and challenging terrain, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make this journey each season. The langar serves free meals to all pilgrims regardless of religion.
